Article 15 box office occupancy report: Ayushmann Khurrana’s film takes a decent start
Ayushmann Khurrana and Isha Talwar’s Article 15 is directed by Mulk and Ra.One helmer Anubhav Sinha
Amidst Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh’s dominance, Ayushmann Khurrana’s Article 15 has released today. While the actor has enjoyed back-to-back hits last year with AndhaDhun and Badhaai but Article 15 is a different ball game altogether. The hard-hitting subject caters to a niche audience as it is not a typical masala entertainer. Talking about the morning shows, the film has registered 15 to 20 per cent occupancy, which is decent enough for a film like this. With positive reviews, we might expect a growth in the evening and night shows but since we have witnessed heavy rains it might affect its opening day business at the box office.
Article 15 is based on Article 15 of the Indian Constitution that prohibits discrimination of Indians on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth, and it takes inspiration from true life events. When asked if Article 15 should be declared tax-free, Ayushmann said, “I definitely feel that this film should be declared as a tax free film because it is necessary that this film should reach every part of the country. It’s not a comedy or an entertaining film. It is based on a vital subject, so it should reach maximum number of people.”
The film has garnered positive reviews from all around the corners. Our critic Urmimala Banerjee gave the film four stars and wrote, “The year 2019 has had films speaking about class divide through some great story-telling. We saw that in Gully Boy and Sonchiriya. Anubhav Sinha’s Article 15 is a great predecessor to these films and is one of the best of 2019! It is dark, disturbing, compelling and thought-provoking in equal measure. At heart, it is a brave well-crafted film made with honest and noble intentions. Kudos to the team!”
